We've all heard of 'netflix and chilling' but you'd be lying if you said you weren't craving a snack during all that 'movie watching!' Lucky for you, Netflix will now sell you a ready-to-eat bag of popcorn to go with your ready-to-binge TV show.
For the new range of Netflix's Now Popping snacks, the streaming platform is collaborating with Popcorn Indiana. "Cult Classic Cheddar Kettle" and "Swoonworthy Cinnamon Kettle" are the two flavors. Walmart stores across the country as well as other merchants will carry the Netflix-branded popcorn; Popcorn Indiana offers a locator search to find the nearest location. According to grocery chain Shoprite an 8-ounce bag of Netflix Now Popping costs $4.49. That means if you buy one bag of each flavor, you’ll already have paid more than the monthly cost of the Netflix Basic plan with ads which comes out to about $6.99/month in the U.S.
It's likely that Netflix doesn't anticipate making a ton of money selling snacks; instead, getting its brand in front of customers at hundreds of retail locations is more important. It should be noted that AMC Theatres has its own popcorn brand as well, which was introduced in 2021 in an effort to expand its branding and possibly generate additional money following a sharp decline in movie theater attendance during the pandemic.
A “movie night and popcorn go together like a hot dog and a bun, ice cream and sprinkles, or a beach day and a lounge chair,” the streamer said in announcing the popcorn line. “That’s why Netflix and Popcorn Indiana have teamed up to debut Now Popping, a new ready-to-eat popcorn line available to snack on now.” As for what’s next: perhaps a Demogorgon-shaped Netflix popcorn bucket?
