There’s something about candles on a cake that makes birthday parties extra special. But if blowing out candles are too last year for you I have good news you there's a hot new trend and it involves burning your cake!
The new trend is simple, the cake has printed images that are lit on fire and burned away to reveal another image underneath!
The origins of the trend are unclear, but burn away cakes are catching on like wildfire (pun intended).
Frosting and edible ink aren’t flammable on their own. Instead, sheets of paper made from sugar, rice, and other forms of starch give burn away cakes their dramatic, fire-y flourish.
To create the reveal, cake decorators layer the flammable paper over the frosting-based design. The two layers are separated by a frosting border, which creates a gap and protects the bottom design from the flames.
Much of the trend’s popularity can be attributed to Canadian baker Namaya Navaratnaranjah, the brains behind the TikTok account @CakesByNams.
