Have you ever been "Voluntold" to do something? The term is used to describe situations where somebody is volunteered for a task without the person getting the chance to say "no," or feeling like they can't say "no."
This issue with being "Voluntelling" in a work setting is, if you as an employee don't push back, this could become a habit and you will be voluntold more often.
There are somethings you can do to fight being voluntold/ voluntelling in the work place. If you are a manager, leave room for employee input. If you are an employee, advocate yourself. Here's how:
- Don’t be vague about what you want or need
- Speak up about the trade-offs if you do this assignment
- If you have to do the assignment, make it more doable
