According to a stress expert there are a few things you should do when you get home from work to help you separate work life from home life. Nina Nesdoly- who has a degree in neuroscience- says it's important to create clear boundaries to differentiate between the two so you can leave work at work. You can do this by using sensory cues. These clues include:
- Changing your clothes
- Pouring yourself a drink (not necessarily alcohol. Maybe it's a specific tea or NA drink that you only have at home.)
If you're working from home, she suggests using certain cues, like a certain candle scent, ONLY while working and then change it when you are off. Nina said, quote:
"Look at what is in your work environment, and this includes working from home. Is there a particular tea that you're drinking? You're looking at screens, lighting that you've got that goes with work, outfits that go with work, and when you're off work - switch those."
"So for example, you might want to, if you're working from home, have a scent like a peppermint around which is very invigorating, very good for focus as a work scent. Then when you're transitioning off work, you're going to light some kind of more relaxing lavender chamomile type scent. And make that association your brain loves cues."
