It might be time for you to get a new SmarTrip card for the metro because you might run into some issues after March 1 if you are holding onto a card from 2012!
Metro just announced that it is phasing out older models of its SmarTrip cards from before 2012 due to an updated payment technology and if you have any money remaining you might want to use it.
Now that Metro is running at full-service it is installing new fare gates and payment options at all rail stations and on buses throughout the DMV to encourage using a mobile wallet.
Apparently 400,000 active users are affected by the new change so it might be worth seeing when your SmarTrip card was issued if it's been a while since you've used it.
