It’s a lot to ask a friend to watch over your house while you’re away, and one couple may have learned that lesson the hard way.
A person wrote into Dear Amy explaining they recently asked a friend to watch over their house when they were gone, and things didn't turn out okay. Since they had just moved in they did their best to clean it before the friend came over, but wound up leaving some dirty dishes in the sink, as well as a bag of trash in the can, and some non-food trash by the back door.
Well, apparently the friend was “livid” that the house was left in such a state and let them have it via text. The couple realize they “are the jerks in this situation” and have apologized to the friend, and even offered to pay her for her troubles, but that apparently isn’t enough for the house sitter. The woman demanded a face-to-face with them when they return to discuss the situation.
The writer now thinks the woman is “overreacting,” and inquired about how he can get her to calm down, and Amy seemed perplexed as to why this woman needs a face-to-face to air her grievances. She suggests sending one more text again apologizing and trying to put an end to the discussion. She also suggests maybe sending the house sitter an apology gift of some sort and then end it there. If the woman is still not willing to forgive, Amy believes there’s nothing more theyu can really do, noting, “She doesn’t get to hold you hostage over this mistake.”
