It’s tough to think of a bigger power move in texting than hitting someone with a “read” and no response. When it happens to you, it’s infuriating, but doing it yourself may be the best move you can make when you’re dealing with a crush.
Just so we’re all on the same page, leaving someone on read is when you keep your phone’s "Read" receipts on, and you purposefully don't answer a text so that they know you saw it, but you haven't replied. Here’s why it works to reel in a boo:
- Tension.Relationship expert Susan Winter says "the partner that creates tension sets up a situation where you won't know where you stand.” Clearly it’s game-playing, but that what-are-we feeling keeps them locked in.
- Ego.When you love someone and read it “activates their desire for acceptance,” says Winter. It’s like telling them, you’re not my highest priority, so try harder to be that.
Just a warning: if you’re thinking about using this technique to make your next match fall for you, it’s not without its drawbacks. If your crush finds out you’re willingly trying to play a game, and manipulate them, it doesn’t really start you off on the right foot now does it. As Winter says, “Game gets game. Real gets real.”
