A tobacco shop owner in Italy is accused of stealing a customer's winning lottery ticket and trying to flee the country. The winning lottery ticket is worth about $580,000. The man was was detained at Rome's Fiumicino airport. Authorities did not find the winning ticket on him and released him.
According the reports, the woman who bought the winning ticket handed it over to a shop employee, who passed it on to the owner for additional verification. According to Italian news reports, the owner did not return the ticket, and ran away on his scooter.
The Italian tax office that runs the lottery blocked lottery ticket numbers to prevent the thief from cashing in the prize.
