How to Prepare for a Winter Storm

How to Prep for Snow

Surviving a winter storm in the DMV (Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia) or any other region requires preparation and caution. Here are some tips to help you stay safe during a winter storm:

Stay Informed:

  • Keep an eye on weather forecasts from reliable sources.
  • Sign up for emergency alerts from local authorities.

Prepare Your Home:

  • Insulate windows and doors to keep the cold air out.
  • Ensure your heating system is working properly.
  • Have sufficient blankets and warm clothing.

Stock Up on Supplies:

  • Create an emergency kit with essentials like non-perishable food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, and a first aid kit.
  • Make sure you have enough supplies for at least 72 hours.

Winterize Your Vehicle:

  • Check your car's tires, brakes, battery, and fluids before winter.
  • Keep an emergency kit in your car, including a blanket, extra clothing, a flashlight, snacks, and a shovel.

Stay Inside During the Storm:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during severe winter weather.
  • If you must go out, inform someone about your destination and expected arrival time.

Dress in Layers:

  • Wear multiple layers to stay warm.
  • Protect extremities with hats, gloves, and waterproof boots.

Keep Generators Outside:

  • If you use a generator, ensure it is placed outside to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Prevent Frozen Pipes:

  • Insulate pipes to prevent freezing.
  • Allow faucets to drip to keep water flowing.

Shovel Safely:

  • If you need to shovel snow, take breaks and lift smaller amounts to avoid overexertion.
  • Use proper lifting techniques to prevent back injuries.

Have Communication Devices Charged:

  • Keep your cell phone, portable chargers, and other communication devices fully charged.

Check on Neighbors:

  • Look out for neighbors, especially the elderly or those with special needs.
  • Share information and offer assistance if needed.

Know the Signs of Hypothermia and Frostbite:

  • Learn the symptoms and seek medical attention if you or someone else exhibits signs of hypothermia or frostbite.
