Queen Elizabeth has died at the age of 96.
“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow,” the palace said in a statement that was shared to The Royal Family's social media accounts.
“Flags across the U.K. were lowered to half-mast ahead of a national minute’s silence and the start of an official period of mourning.”
Reports share that a funeral will occur at Westminster Abby in 10 days and the country will observe 2 minutes of silence before her burial.
Queen Elizabeth assumed her role in 1952 following her father' death and served for 70 years. She was both the oldest and longest serving monarch in the country's history.
Prince Charles, her oldest son, is next in line for the throne and his coronation ceremony will take place at a later time.
