The Captain is back!

The Washington Capitals have announced that they've re-signed Alex Ovechkin to a 5 year, $47.5 million contract to keep him in our nation's capital through the 2025-26 season.

"Alex is a world-class athlete who will forever be regarded not only for leading the team to achieve our ultimate goal of winning the Stanley Cup, but also for inspiring the next generation of fans and youth players," said Ted Leonsis, Monumental Sports & Entertainment Founder and CEO.

Ovechkin has proved himself worthy of the extension. Since joining the team during the 2005-2006 season, he leads the franchise in games played (1,197), goals (730) and points (1,320). In addition, the Caps have ranked #2 in the league in games won (689) and points (1,524) since his rookie year.

"Alex is the face of our franchise and is committed to this organization and this city," said general manager Brian MacLellan. "Alex embodies what our franchise is all about, and we're thrilled that he will continue his career in the Caps uniform for the next five years."
