Unusual: River Otter Spotted at Tidal Basin in Washington DC

Well, this isn't a sight we see very often.

The National Mall National Park Service tweeted out that a wild North American river otter was spotted hanging out at the Tidal Basin's paddle boats this afternoon.

Included in the tweet, the National Park Service wants to remind DC that "[t]hough [river otters] are cute & playful, you otter remember that they are wild animals & never get too close."

According to DCist, the "river otters are native to the Potomac River" but given that the animals are primarily nocturnal, this is certainly a rare sight for such a populated area. The publication also noted that the otter's appearance is actually a promising sign for the environment because they do not like polluted water.
