I am the biggest book lover you can think of and I was horrified when I learned why you need to freeze the second-hand books you buy and it will shock you too!
An avid reader has shocked the internet with the unusual thing she always does with thrifted books: putting them in the freezer. The book lover reveals her freezer to reveal not only frozen foods but also a collection of books, each sealed within zip-lock bags. The woman revealed the motivation behind freezing the stories and apparently our books are homes to creepy crawly book lice.
You can never be sure of what has touched the book and what germs are on it. To check for insects, shake the book over your bath. This way you can quickly wash away any bugs that may fall out, but make sure to wash them away as soon as you see them. Book lice are tiny and generally a dark white or brownish color. They are rather fond of book glue, moisture and mold, which is why you often find them living their best life within the pages of an old book
The problem isn't just that these bugs can chew and damage your books; it's that once they are in your home, they can make their way into other areas, such as your furnishings and cause further damage. The good news is that freezing books can kill off any living insects and their eggs. Make sure the book is at room temperature, then wrap the book up in a plastic bag sealed with gaffer tape or zip-lock bag and place into your freezer for 48 hours. This prevents damaging the book by keeping out as much moisture as possible.
