An etiquette expert is saying that congratulating a couple on their engagement is rude. Instead, Alison M. Cheperdak says she says things like "I’m so happy for your both” or “best wishes.”
Alison explained on Tiktok the reason for this is because of the history behind saying "congratulations" at a wedding. Quote:
"traditional etiquette used to suggest that you would say congratulations to the groom, but not to they bride, because saying congratulations to the bride was to say that you are surprised that she found someone who wants to love her for every day of the rest of her life."

She explains she doesn't say "congratulations" because getting she doesn't believe getting married is an achievement the same way other milestones are that you congratulate someone for.
