Are You Washing Your Winter Coat Enough?

When was the last time you washed your winter coat? A new study revealed that 1 in 5 people wash their winter coats once a year, and 17% admitted they never washed their outerwear at all.

Laundry expert Sarah Dempsey understands that it may not seem necessary to was your outer coats on a regular basis, especially if you're laying since the don't get dirty by body odor, but she pointed out, quote, "they will be affected by the weather, getting wet in the rain, and picking up pollutants and dirt through wear over the season.”

So how often should you be cleaning your winter coats? It depends on several factors like: how often you wear it, how you store it, what material it is, etc. Here's what Sarah Dempsey suggests:

  • Wool- once per season. If it gets wet make sure to let it dry thoroughly before storing.
  • Leather- once or twice a season, but if you wear it often you could clean it more
  • Quilted Jackets and Parkas- Twice a season, especially if worn daily.
