The Oscar - winning short film, "Hair Love" has hit YouTube during Black History Month - and it is a powerful 6 minute animation of a father learning to do his 7 year old daughter's hair for the first time - and after some time, he perfects it. It's not until the end that they go to a hospital room where Zaya's mother is sitting with a scarf on her head and takes the scarf off to reveal she's lost all of her hair.
Matthew A. Cherry who co-wrote and directed it states: "that he inspired to create Hair Love to portray a Black fathers outside of stereotypes, because "Black fathers have had one of the worst raps in mainstream media as being portrayed as being deadbeats and not being involved.”[3]He and Toliver also stated that they wanted to increase representation of Black hair."
