We all have our own style when it comes to putting on a bra, and while there’s technically no wrong way to do it, bra experts say there is a right way. Doing it the proper way can help your undergarments last longer and keep you feeling as comfy as possible. And the right way definitely isn’t hooking it in the front and sliding and twisting the bra around to get it on, like a lot of us do.
According to Allena Rissa, bra-fitting expert and editor of The Better Fit, this is the best way to put on a bra:
- Start with the straps and lean forward- Rissa suggests sliding your arms through the straps, then clasping the band behind you on the loosest hook setting.
- Always use the loosest hook with a new bra- This way as it stretches over time, you move to the tighter hooks.
- Now that the bra is on, make sure it’s properly supporting you- Rissa says this requires positioning your chest within the bra cups. “Bend forward and, using the opposite hand, scoop your breast so that it is fully cupped in your hand,” she explains. “From here, reposition your breast so it is entirely in the bra cup.”
- Double-check the band- Stand up straight and make sure your bra band is straight across your back.
- Adjust the straps- So they feel snug against your skin, but not so tight they dig in and leave marks.
By putting on your bra this way, you avoid crushing the cups or stretching out the bra, so it’ll last longer and fit better. And as much as we pay for bras, we want them to last as long as possible.
