Sad new for all of us Star Wards die-hards because a new study conducted by the University of Turin has determined that The Wizard of Oz has beaten Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope as the "most influential" movie of all time!
Out of over 47,000 movies The Wizard of Oz was referenced the most and had the largest amount of spin-offs which is why it was regard as the "most influential."
Most of these references were to "Over the Rainbow" or the quote “I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore,” but there are also direct parodies like in Spongebob Squarepants, Futurama, The Muppets' Wizard of Oz, or even a prequel in Oz the Great and Powerful.
The original Star Wars (Episode IV: A New Hope) was second in the top 20, which you can see below, but if it weren't for Wizard of Oz we may not have even had Star Wars:
- The Wizard of Oz (1939)
- Star Wars (1977)
- Psycho (1960)
- King Kong (1933)
- 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
- Metropolis (1927)
- Citizen Kane (1941)
- The Birth of a Nation (1915)
- Frankenstein (1931)
- Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
- Casablanca (1942)
- Dracula (1931)
- The Godfather (1972)
- Jaws (1975)
- Nosferatu (1922)
- The Searchers (1956)
- Cabiria (1914)
