Are You Guilty of "Toxic Forgiveness"

You've heard about toxic relationships and toxic workplaces, but have you heard of toxic forgiveness?

According to licensed mental health counselor, Emily West, quote:

"it's really describing a pressured or superficial forgiveness."

Emily added that it can happen when someone feels pressure (internal or external) to rush to forgive someone without taking time to process your their feelings.

It's essentially rushing to forgive someone to avoid the conflict and this tends to be more common with people-pleasers. Rushing to forgive and forget, however, can have adverse effects since you aren't giving yourself the time to process those emotions. It can lead to anger and resentment and broken relationships.

Here's how to tell if you are practicing toxic forgiving, according to HuffPost:

  • You move on from an issue to quickly
  • You feel conflicting emotions in the relationship
  • You are pulling away
  • You accept a poor or defensive apology
  • You downplaying your hurt
