How The Strongest Couples Fight, According to Therapist

Every relationship will have disagreements, but how the couple handles those disagreements can determine if they'll last or fizzle out. A therapist spoke to YourTango and revealed that way that strong couples argue.

How The Strongest Couples Fight:

  1. Strong couples fight friendly- there's always a foundation of love and support. They are not fighting to win, they are fighting for a solution together.
  2. Strong couples take a beat- take a moment before responding out of anger.
  3. Strong couples maintain eye contact- this shows they are fully engaged and listening.
  4. Strong couples can hear each other out in 5 minutes- Psychotherapist and relationship expert Dr. Stan Tatkin recommends a technique known as the "5-Minute Argument Practice." This technique involves setting a timer for 5 minutes and allowing each person the time to express their thoughts and concerns without interruptions.
  5. Strong couples focus their arguments on one topic at a time- don't bring up past issues.
