There may be some things you’re saying at work that are manipulative, without you even realizing it!
There are some phrases you should watch out for.
- “We all think..”Do not speak on behalf of other people are as though everyone agrees with you. It also gives off the message that a differing perspective would be at odds with the group.
- “Do you have a minute?”It may seem polite, but not providing any content can actually guilt the person into saying yes as its hard to turn down. Instead, try to get right to the point.
- “I’m not saying you should do X, but…”Fun fact – the brain doesn’t really process “not” so instead you end up hearing that you should do X.
- “Don’t spend all night on this.”A lot of times, it’s said late in the day, and followed by a “but,” making it not as well-intended as it comes off.
- “Don’t you agree?” or “Isn’t this best?”Neither of these phrases invite actual discussion or an option for a disagreement.
