“Trauma Dumping” Can Be Toxic To Your Friendships

After a tough day at work or a bad date, it feels good to vent to a friend about it, right? Maybe not, because too much venting can be toxic to your friendship. Experts call it “trauma dumping.”

Just like you might be having a bad day, your friend might not be in a good spot, either. Not everyone is prepared at all times to have an intense conversation about people’s feelings and problems.

Make sure that before you start the convo you are both on the same page.

Trauma dumping is when you “dump traumatic thoughts, feelings, energy onto an unsuspecting person.” It might make you feel better to get it all out, but you’ll be a better friend if you make sure you’re not draining the person you’re talking to.
