Geneticists, led by Harvard Medical School's George Church, are trying to bring back the woolly mammoth from extinction... kind of.
The plan ins't to clone a mammoth. The plan DNA that scientists have extracted from woolly mammoth remains will be used to create, through genetic engineering, an elephant-mammoth hybrid.
They're saying that bringing back the mammoth in this altered elephant-mammoth form could help "restore the fragile Arctic tundra ecosystem, combat the climate crisis, and preserve the endangered Asian elephant."
And the efforts got a major boost this week with an investment of $15million. THIS MIGHT ACTUALLY HAPPEN.
