Katie Ledecky Won The First Gold Medal Ever In Women's 1500m Freestyle

Swimming - Olympics: Day 5

Our Bethesda native has finally taken home gold at the Tokyo Games and she did it in a big way by making history as the first gold medal Olympian ever!

Katie Ledecky took home the gold medal earlier today at the first-ever women's 1500-meter freestyle after swimming 30 laps and beating second place by more than four seconds.

The event hadn’t been on the Olympic program until its addition this year and Ledecky actually has the world record for the event which she set in 2018 so know she completely dominates at it.

The even better part is that Team USA's Erica Sullivan came in second right behind Ledecky so they had a great moment where they hugged after finishing the event!

You can see the video of Ledecky's finish below and she still has another chance at one more gold medal when she competes in the 800m freestyle later this week!
