Anyone who’s currently looking for love knows that dating isn’t easy, and a new poll finds that a lot of singles feel a lot of pressure when putting themselves out on the market.
A new Plenty of Fish survey finds 41% of singles, regardless of age or gender, say they feel pressure to be interesting on a first date, while 16% feel pressure to be talkative and 12% feel the same about being fun.
And all that pressure is causing many folks looking for love to fib a bit. In fact, half of singles say they feel pressure to lie about their interests and hobbies, with 33% saying they sometimes feel the need to adopt an interest or hobby of someone they're dating.Singles also feel pressure to lie bout their:
- Looks and appearance (45%)
- Income and career (34%)
- Level of education (31%)
So, where is all this pressure coming from? Well, mostly from themselves, with 53% of male singles and 49% of female singles saying the pressure is self-induced. Some of that pressure comes from family (22% male vs. 17% female), while 22% say it comes from friends, and 19% from social media.
All this pressure is leading some to give up, at least temporarily. It seems 62% of singles take breaks from dating to focus on themselves, with 50% of respondents not having gone on a date in the last year.
The poll also finds that 84% of singles want more authenticity in dating, and one thing they’d love to see gone is face filters, with 70% of singles saying they are deceptive, and 52% wanting them banned from dating apps. As for what face filters are telling potential mates, 20% say it implies they are pretending to be something they're not, while 23% say it makes the person seem insecure and 16% say they appear superficial.
