Chances Are Your Spouse Isn't Honest With You About Money!

When it comes to relationships, lying is never a good thing, but it seems a lot of folks are telling fibs, at least in the beginning of a relationship, and most of those untruths have to do with money.

A new poll finds that a lot of Americans aren’t honest with their partners about their finances, with 31% saying they’ve lied about their salary, 28% have lied about spending habits and another 24% have lied about the amount of debt they have.

Debt is actually a pretty huge issue when it comes to relationships, which may be why the average person waits six months before they break the news of their debt to a new partner. Although it seems not all debt is equal, with 35% of people thinking credit card debt is worse than student loan debt, and 14% of people thinking credit card debt over $10,000 is a relationship red flag.

  • But it turns out, there may not really be a reason to lie to anyone about money. The poll also asked folks what are the biggest red flags when it comes to dating someone, and while credit card debt was up there, it certainly wasn’t the biggest red flag. In fact, drinking too much is the biggest red flag (64%), followed by bad manners (56%).Other red flags include:
  • Dirty living space (53%)
  • Credit card debt (50%)
  • Always on the phone even when we’re on a date (46%)
  • Argumentative (46%)
  • Cheap (46%)
  • Poor clothing choices (46%)
  • Never introducing me to family and friends (45%)
