The Benefits of Being Friends Before Dating Someone

If you’ve ever considered dating one of your friends but thought it was a bad idea, you may want to reconsider. Sometimes friendships turn romantic and being buddies first has its advantages. These are the benefits to being friends before dating, according to relationship expert and advice columnistApril Masini.

  • You’ve gotten to know each other in a different way- You’ll have a unique perspective of someone if you were friends before dating and know them in a totally different way than if you met and started dating right away. Plus, you can skip all those typical first date questions.
  • You'll already be familiar with their life and many of their quirks- Since you already know them, you probably already know their hobbies and what they like and don’t, so you won’t have to wonder if they really are who they seem to be. And you’ve had time to build up trust, which is important for a healthy relationship.
  • You don’t have to deal with all that awkwardness of introducing them to your loved ones- If you’re dating a friend who’s already in your social circle, they already know your friends, so you can skip all those stressful meetups.
  • If you have kids, they may be more relaxed about you dating someone they’re already familiar with- If either of you have kids, they’ve probably met the friend you’re now dating and that could make the situation less tense for everyone.
  • You may have already been through difficult times together- Another upside to being friends before dating is that you feel comfortable being yourself in front of each other, even during tough times. They’ve seen you after a fight with your mom or bestie and still like you, so it takes some pressure off.
