October Brings Us Two Full Moons: The Harvest Moon & a Rare Blue Moon!

October is here! A full moon will rise twice this month: Tonight, October 1, and again on Halloween with a rare full blue moon — something that won’t happen again for nearly 20 years in 2039!

Tonight’s full moon is the harvest moon and will rise at 5:05 pm ET. The name is given to the full moon that occurs closest to the autumnal equinox and provides light for farmers harvesting their crops into the night ahead of winter, according to the Farmer's Almanac.

For those who are looking for what the harvest moon means for you, personally, it’s time to let things go. Tonight’s harvest moon will cause you to dig deeper into yourself. Plus, since Mars is currently in retrograde, astrologers add it will allow for opportunities of healing. Use it as a chance to tend to whatever you've been holding onto and let the 'ish go!

And, because 2020 isn't weird enough, it's a year with 13 full moons rather than 12, and October’s second full moon, the blue moon, occurs on Halloween. While the moon won't actually look blue, the second full moon in one month is usually referred to as a blue moon. This happens every 2.5 to three years, which is why we have the saying "once in a blue moon."
