Ladies!! Don't feel guilty for hitting that snooze button one or two more times! It turns out that women need more sleep than men.
According to sleep expert, Dr Carmel Harrington, quote, "Up until puberty, boys and girl need about the same amount of sleep. However, once puberty hits, women need more sleep than men, and they will for the rest of their lives; on average about 20 minutes extra!"
Here are some things that can mess with your sleep:
- Hormonal changes - apparently women produce LESS melatonin in the second half of their cycle, plus cramps and other pain might be keeping you awake.
- The fact that women are more prone to sleep problems like insomnia than men are.
- Pregnancy- hello waking up to pee all night long does not make a good night sleep. Not to mention waking up once the baby is born all night long.
- Menopause - more hormonal changes, hot flashes, waking up early.
So if you're looking for an excuse to take a nap today, just blame science.
