If you had to ban a word or phrase from further use in 2022, what would you choose? A university in Michigan says "wait, what?" tops its list of "banished" words in 2022!

Lake Superior State University has published an annual list of "banished" words every year since 1976 and this year ten words made the list with "wait, what?" taking the top spot.

Officials defended the ranking by stating that the two four-letter words should "not go together under any circumstances" and if you think about the phrase you only really use it when you're not paying attention.

Here are the other words that made the list and we can't wait to see what's in the running for 2023:

  • "You're on mute"
  • "Asking for a friend"
  • "Supply chain"
  • "At the end of the day"
  • "That being said"
  • "Circle back"
  • "Deep dive."
