DC Mayor Muriel Bowser Orders Stay-At-Home for District

Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser announced today (March 30) an order that all non-essential workers must stay at home in order to combat the spread of COVID-19.

Earlier in the day, both Maryland Governor Larry Hogan and Virginia Governor Ralph Northam ordered similar measures as the confirmed cases in the DMV region reportedly continue to rise sharply.

In a tweet, Bowser says:

The Mayor's Order specifies that residents may only leave their residences to:

  • engage in essential activities, including obtaining medical care that cannot be provided through telehealth and obtaining food and essential household goods;
  • work at essential businesses;
  • engage in essential travel; or
  • engage in allowable recreational activities, as defined by the Mayor’s Order.

Violating the Order can result in a misdemeanor and if convicted, a fine not exceeding $5,000, imprisonment for not more than 90 days, or both.
